William Hurt stars in this Ken Russell film as scientist Eddie Jessup, a "Faust freak" obsessed with discovering the genetic consciousness of mankind by ingesting mind-altering drugs and floating in an isolation tank. Based on a story by Paddy Chayefsky, the numerous existential inquiries of Altered States are thought-provoking, although Russell doesn't help matters with his overblown psychedelic imagery. Co-stars Blair Brown, Charles Haid, and Bob Baliban deliver convincing performances. Good transfer from an acceptable print, trailer, TV spots, textual supplements.
