First-time director Kasi Lemmons crafts a unique tale of loyalty and superstition as an extended family in the deep South copes with their father's infidelity. Samuel L. Jackson gives an understated performance, Lynn Whitfield and Debbi Morgan are excellent as his wife and his sister, and for once the term "child actor" is not an oxymoron, for both Jurnee Smollett and Meagan Good are convincing as the daughters who struggle for their father's attention. Also included is Lemmons' short film "Mr. Jordan," an early prototype of Eve's Bayou. Good transfer, atmospheric 5.1, trailer, textual supplements.
