The Night Porter: The Criterion Collection
Your classic love story: a former Nazi torture doctor (Dirk Bogarde), hiding as a hotel porter in post-war Austria, rekindles the passion of his halcyon days by striking up a sado-masochistic affair with a former concentration camp victim (Charlotte Rampling). This dull European "art" film forsakes plotting for confused psychobabble, limiting its lost actors to little more than hysterical eye-rolling and hair-pulling. A high-concept attempt at somber sleaze which fails completely to wring anything remotely compelling from its attention-grabbing plot -- and with sex scenes too tame to please the perverts. Despite Criterion's standard of quality, no effort of presentation can inspire this lifeless muck. In 1.85:1 widescreen and 2.0 Dolby mono. Keep case.
