Sophomore director Boaz Yakin follows up his brilliant 1994 debut Fresh with this uneven but fascinating probe into a close-knit community of Orthodox Brooklyn Jews. Rene Zellweger stars as Sonia, a young mother and wife struggling with personal yearnings that threaten to disrupt her place in this male-centered, supressive society. Although Yakin's tone is shaky at the start, his tale eventually straightens out into a quiet, moving story of self-discovery and acceptance. Zellweger does a fine job in this demanding role and Christopher Eccleston is excellent as her unscrupulous brother-in-law. Presented in 1.85:1 widescreen and 5.1 Dolby Digital. Trailers, keep case.
