The Real Blonde
A funny and involving look at the commodification and exploitation of sexual confusion amongst arty types in contemporary New York. Writer-director Tom DiCillo balances a lively ensemble (Matthew Modine, Catherine Keener, Daryl Hannah, Maxwell Caulfield, Elizabeth Berkley, Marlo Thomas, Bridgette Wilson, Buck Henry, Christopher Lloyd, Kathleen Turner, Denis Leary, Steve Buscemi, Dave Chapple) with a broad sense of humor and good heart. While Modine's creditless actor threatens to destroy a long-term relationship for his artistic pride, his womanizing soap actor buddy Caulfield searches vainly for sex with a real blonde. DiCillo (Living in Oblivion) graces this bouncy film with touches of wit and insight, and happens upon moments of satire so sharp they hurt -- like when an abused young model's black eye is sexily incorporated into a photo shoot. Great looking 1.85 widescreen transfer, with audio available in DD 5.1, Dolby Surround 2.0, and French 2.0. No extras.
