Seven Samurai: The Criterion Collection
The late Akira Kurosawa gave us his best film with this epic masterpiece about a group of 16th century samurai who are hired to defend a rural village from bandits. While prints of this film have been neglected over the years, this Criterion edition manages to restore it to watchable condition, even though it is far from pristine. Includes an exceptionally informative commentary track with Japanese film expert Michael Jeck.
(Editor's Note: The original Criterion DVD of Seven Samurai, which was not region-coded and featured documentary footage on the print-restoration process, has been discontinued for legal reasons and is considered a collector's item. A second edition of this disc has since been released.)
