Sliding Doors
A young woman barely catches the train home -- or she misses it by seconds. This insignificant "what if?" scenario has a greater effect on her life than she can possibly imagine, as we see the two paths unfold, linked by karma and split by circumstance. This story of parallel lives is a clever conceit, and it's sprinkled with touches of humor and insight. Unfortunately, our heroine Helen (Gwyneth Paltrow) is a tad too dull to spring the premise into promise, and the characters around her are too one-dimensional for any intrinsic interest. The inter-cutting of Helen's split-fates is expertly handled by first-time director Peter Hewitt; it's his first-time screenwriter (the self-same Peter Hewitt) who lets us down. Neat idea though. Fine transfer in 1.85 widescreen, DD 5.1 or 2.0, no extras.
