West Side Story
Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins' 1961 Academy-Award winning musical has been given a wonderful transfer to disc by MGM. Tony (Richard Beymer), a friend of the hoodlum Jets, falls in love with Maria (Natalie Wood), whose brother leads the rival Sharks. This Romeo and Juliet update plays against the backdrop of New York City with great songs by Leonard Bernstein and Steven Sondheim and energetic dance numbers choreographed by Robbins (who directed the original Broadway production). Also starring Rita Moreno, Russ Tamblyn, and George Chakiris. Songs include "Maria," "Tonight, Tonight," "America," "When You're a Jet," and "Cool." The musical number "Gee, Officer Krupke" is a particular standout. Excellent source print, new 5.1 mix, original overture and exit/credit sequence, original theatrical trailer.
